EMUI 10 is the major and the latest EMUI update from Huawei that was officially announced at Huawei Developer Conference 2019 (HDC 2019) in China. This major UI update is based on Google’s latest Android 10 OS. However, Google is currently working on Android 11 and already released the Android 11 Beta update publicly.
EMUI 10 has a 60% improvement in GPU Turbo, above 20% improvement in EROFS ROM, and brings the most-requested system-wide Dark Mode with the Multi-screen support. It has all-new redesigned UI, icons, color elements, magazine-style UI, improved animation transitions, improved camera app, privacy features, gestures navigation, shortcuts, Always-on Display (AOD) mode, 3D Touch, Live Caption, improved battery saver, Huawei Beam, app drawer gesture, split-screen, screen recording, etc.

Now, let’s take a brief look at the features below.
EMUI 10: Features
Google has officially announced the Android Q Developer Preview for a bunch of flagship devices a couple of months ago. Currently, the final beta release which is Android Q Beta 6 running. Google will release the final official stable Android Q version in August, this month. It offers so many features and functionalities to the system and improved the stability and security concerns as well. Most of these features will be added in EMUI 10.
3D Touch
The 3D touch feature is already available on the iPhone which will allow users to touch the screen quite lightly and gives a super smooth touch effect with animation. It feels so smooth and responsive than a normal touch pressure effect.
This time Huawei has done some of the tweaks and adjustments to provide the feature in its new UI.
Live Caption
Android Q’s another useful feature called Live Caption brings real-time captions to media on your device. It will provide live captions for the videos, podcasts, and audio messages, apps, etc. Most importantly, it doesn’t require an internet connection to the device and works offline as well. This will work via Google Duplex and an improved speech recognition which Google announced early this year.
When user will play a video on Android Q running device, the system will automatically detect it and starts providing captions in real-time just like a subtitle. That’s a cool feature. Google found that so many users watch videos in crowded places and there are millions of users are the deaf or low hearing issue. The live captions will come in handy for those users very much. We will definitely see that feature on the latest EMUI version.

System-Wide Dark Mode
In 2019, the dark mode or night mode feature is trending and most of the users like it very much. It basically gives a new UI look and feels to the device or apps which you’re using. Additionally, it saves a lot of battery juice and your eyes will also get some relief during night time usage. This Google and most of the popular brands have come out with dark mode option whether it’s an app or site or browser. It’s worth mentioning that Google apps, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube all support night mode now.
In the Android Q, you will get a new system-wide dark mode feature which will convert all the UI and apps interface to the dark mode. You just need to go to the device Settings > Display > turn on the Battery Saver mode and you’re good to go. You can do this easily from the Quick Shortcut toggle as well. If any third-party app doesn’t get the dark theme, users can force enable it.
Simplified Settings (Organized)
The reorganized order in the main Settings menu will come in handy for most of the users. The grouped tab/category with drop-down option is just awesome those who use the Settings menu a lot. It basically recommends toggle or settings to the user, depends on their usage pattern like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi.
Swipe Gesture Navigation Control
Swipe gesture navigation system introduced in Android 9.0 Pie last year and it works really great. Those who’re using an 18:9 or above aspect ratio display device and runs on Android Pie, it’s very useful. The Pie offers gesture navigation by swipe up from the bottom to open the app drawer. While a dedicated back button, and swipe left or right the home button will switch between opened apps.
You can set gestures from the phone Settings > System > Gestures. In Android Q, everything is the same but only the dedicated back button now removed. There is only one home button appears which will also do the back button tasks by swiping it. Additionally, in EMUI 10, you will get some more gesture options like swipe up from the left side and right side, etc.
App Drawer Gesture (Swipe Up)
Old is Gold. All of us knows that. It seems that Huawei has literally brought the previous generation to swipe up from the home screen to open the app drawer menu in 2019 EMUI 10 version. It was quite popular in third-party launchers and Pixel launchers mostly. It’s worth mentioning that Xiaomi has also introduced a similar kind of gesture control for its MIUI launcher.
New Stock Camera UI
The stock EMUI camera app UI has been tweaked a little bit. The slider between camera shutter button and modes text appears as a red dot this time. That looks minimal and cool though.
Notification and Quick Settings Toggle
The latest upcoming EMUI version will allow users to choose and set notification controls. It will offer a specific type of notifications like gentle or interruptive. While Huawei has brought a clean and increased number of toggle in the quick shortcut tile. The bunch of toggles can be placed according to your preference.
New Transition Animation of Swipe to Go Home
Huawei has introduced the new transition animation style for the swipe to go home gesture. Though the animation mostly looks like similar to the iOS style. You can additionally, reduce the animation effect from the Developer options.
New Quick Settings Toggle Animation
Another animation changes made to the new UI for the quick shortcut toggle on/off. Though the animation isn’t available for all the tiles it shows a moving animation or loop. Such as when you turn on the Airplane mode from the toggle, the plane runs for once during the initialization process.
Privacy and Security
The Android Q offers better privacy and security checkmarks. It enables the automatic system permissions to the apps to choose which one requires it and which one isn’t. The app permissions, map permissions enhanced a lot. This will increase the device and user data more secure and stable.
While the background running apps which collects data and user activity, Android 10 will block all of these.
Chat Bubbles
‘Chat Bubbles’ is a new feature in Android Q. It will be like Facebook Messenger where users can easily chat without opening or closing other apps or switching between it. Bubbles will appear with the Notification system. Therefore, at the top of the content, you will see notifications and if it allows reply option, the chat bubble will appear and you can do it as same as the quick reply feature.
Foldables Support
This feature will improve the foldable device support which will run on Android Q. The next generation is based on foldable where everything can be folded which has a bigger display. You can call it all-in-one convertibles as well. It includes onResume and onPause support with multi-resume and the notify option with the app. Android developers also changed the resizeableActivity manifest attribute works which will help you manage how the apps will display on foldable and large screens.
Desktop Mode
Android Q in EMUI 10 will feature desktop mode to connect your device easily to the monitor. Then you will be able to use multi-windows support as well.
Share Content Faster
The new improved Sharing Shortcut or feature will let you quickly switch to another app to share contents faster and easier. The sharing UI has also been improved with a bunch of new apps to share. You can also share the Wi-Fi password via QR codes to friends and family easily.
Enhanced Always On Display
Always On Display feature is quite useful and most loved by the users. Now, the feature is optimized with Android Q. Now, the battery indicator is placed at the top-right corner. It was previously placed at the bottom side. You will also see the current music playing just like the lock screen which is a good move.
Dual SIM Dual Standby
As some of the Android devices now come with eSIM option and due to the slimmer and compact size of smartphones, the next-generation devices will come with eSIM only. So, the physical SIM card and eSIM can’t be activated together. In Android Q, this is fixed now. Enjoy the dual standby option with ease.
More Features:
- Huawei Beam is still available and works fine in Google Play Services called ‘Fast Share’.
- The new EMUI launcher in the new version is slightly tweaked. It now looks more subtle and the search bar comes with rounded corners.
- Android Q offers better control over apps resume and pauses feature while running in the background.

Honor 9i [Custom ROM]
Update as of August 20: After waiting for quite a while, Honor 9i is finally getting a custom ROM as per the OpenKirin project. This will allow Honor 9i users to flash Android 10 via OpenKirin replacing it from MagicUI which is Honor’s custom-made UI out-of-the-box. Here are a few flaws with the build although that’s the case with any build or firmware you try now. Note that this is for Chinese Honor 9i since there’s already a Honor 9i outside China and both these devices aren’t the same. [Source]
Honor 9N [Custom ROM]
Update as of August 20: After waiting for quite some time, the OpenKirin project has introduced stock Android 10 version available for downloads on Honor 9N devices outside China. You can upgrade to OpenKirin’s Android 10 custom ROM to get the most of the platform without the frills of a custom UI like MagicUI on Honor devices. Note that OpenKirin Android 10 does have some inconsistencies and bugs to be ironed out. [Source]
