Hugh Jackman replaces Ryan Reynolds in Free Guy fan art and Reynolds isn’t happy. Both Reynolds and Jackman have developed a friendly rivalry over the past few years, particularly via their various social media accounts.

Though the back and forth banter of Reynolds and Jackman might appear mean spirited at times, the two stars are actually great friends and it is perhaps this fact that makes their bickering all the more humorous. The trolling has been going on for several years now, with popular topics ranging from Jackman’s decision not to join Reynolds’ wildly popular Deadpool character on screen to having Jake Gyllenhaal take part on Instagram’s #BestFriendsDay to utilizing John Legend’s recently crowned status as People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive in order to drive home a point about who was and wasn’t worthy of the title. Both stars are currently in the process of promoting new projects, with Jackman starring in Bad Education, a film adaptation of a true life public school embezzlement scandal and Reynolds set to appear in Michael Bay’s latest film 6 Underground this December on Netflix.

As far as future projects go, however, Reynolds is already working to promote this coming summer’s Free Guy. The film sees the Deadpool star take on an entirely original concept in which a mild mannered man discovers that he is an NPC in an ultra violent online video game. Over the past several months we’ve been given a poster for the film, a particularly humorous trailer announce from Reynolds and of course, an official trailer. But it seems the Jackman/Reynolds rivalry knows no bounds and the latest jab comes courtesy of Jackman’s Instagram account. Thanks to a quick-thinking fan, Reynolds’ Free Guy poster has been altered to showcase Jackman as the leading man. Jackman thanked the fan in the post, writing “A small edit to make this a much better promotional tool. Thank you @Karthik_nj #repost”. For his part, Reynolds responded with a blunt “What the shit?!?” Check it out below:

Aside from being a hilarious dig at Reynolds and his upcoming project, the facial switch can only serve to bring even more attention to Free Guy. Despite what Jackman (as well as the creator of the redesigned poster) may think, Reynolds is perfectly suited for his role as Guy in the action-comedy. Free Guy offers Reynolds a similar sort of opportunity for the chaotic comedy that made both Deadpool films such massive hits, and although the new film has only just released its first trailer, there is quite a lot to take in during its all too brief run time. While Jackman appears to be moving away from the action genre that he found success in as Wolverine, Reynolds seems to be hitting his stride with a style of filmmaking that the 43-year-old arguably does better than anyone else at the moment.

Regardless of whether Free Guy is a hit or not – and at present all signs point to it being a definite summer 2020 highlight, the online trolling rivalry of Jackman and Reynolds is always worth paying attention to. The fact that both accomplished actors have the platform to take some pretty hilarious swings at one another from time to time is a true delight for fans, and quite possibly the only thing that’s better than this most recent jab is the anticipation of who will strike next.
