Fans can (and should) blame Fox and the creative team behind 2015’s Fantastic Four reboot for mishandling those characters and all their related villains and supporting players. The poor quality and lack of development on that front not only means no quality Fantastic Four, Doctor Doom, or related cosmic tales on the big screen, it also means the established Marvel Cinematic Universe is blocked from using many of the characters and stories from the comics.
No one gets to use them and that’s a crime against the fans.
If that doesn’t frustrate you enough, how about this: If Twentieth Century Fox and Marvel Entertainment could have worked out some sort of shared universe or crossover agreement like Sony Pictures did with Marvel Studios to merge Spider-Man into the MCU, then Hugh Jackman would not have made Logan with the idea that it’d be his last movie. He would have kept playing the character. He would have been an Avenger!
During the New York press junket for Logan the weekend before last, Fox let us bring a Wolverine super fan to watch the movie with us early and interview Hugh Jackman himself, since it sadly is this last time as the character. And during the interview, comparisons and jokes came up about how Logan compares to Old Man Logan in Marvel Comics, and how a chance to be a part of The Avengers would have changed everything.
In a perfect world, film rights aside, if you were offered the chance to be in an Avengers movie, would you be on for that? Would you be excited for it?
What other characters or story arcs from comics, that haven’t gotten a chance to get into the movies, would you have like to have seen or seen come through?
Hugh Jackman: If that was on the table when I made my decision, it certainly would have made me pause. That’s for sure. Because I always love the idea of him within that dynamic, with the Hulk obviously, with Iron Man but there’s a lot of smarter people with MBAs who can’t figure that out [laughter]. You never know.
Definitely not.
Hugh Jackman: I don’t know. This was the one that I really thought…When I spoke with the guys who created Old Man Logan – a lot of people think, “Oh this is Old Man Logan.” And I’m like, “Well….” The inspiration for that was Unforgiven. That’s what we have in common. But there’s no Hulk babies in this one [laughter]
We can only dream what it’d be like for Hugh Jackman to share the screen with Robert Downey Jr., as Marvel super heroes on the same team.
Hugh Jackman: At the moment, honestly, if I really did have them there, I probably wouldn’t have said this is the last. It just feels like this is the right time [to leave the character].
