Before today, Hulu’s live TV streaming service has been capped at 30 frames per second (fps). This made it problematic to watch things such as sports, which rely on high frame rates.
Today, the company announced that it will be rolling out 60fps content to select channels and will be available on all of its platforms including iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. Hulu says this is only “Phase 1” and it has plans on adding more channels in the future.

The company notes that certain Fox/NBC channels will prioritize picture quality over frame rate and will revert back to 30fps in some cases.

- About half of our available FOX affiliates
- All of our available NBC affiliates, as well as New England Channel News
In addition to Apple TV, iPhone, and iPad, the Phase 1 rollout will apply to Xbox One, Fire TV, Samsung Tizen TV, and Nintendo Switch. Hulu says the frame rate increase will be most noticeable with “watching sports or news,” being just in time for “the 2018 Winter Olympics and March Madness.”
Today’s update is a step in the right direction for Hulu TV subscribers. However, lack of an intuitive and friendly interface is a turn off for some.
Last month, Hulu announced that it is working on bringing a refreshed guide along with new recommendation features to the service. Hulu TV starts at $40/month.
