The last series of History Channel’s investigative show aired over a year ago, but will fans ever get to see Hunting Hitler season 4? Hunting Hitler was inspired by the release of declassified FBI documents that showed the bureau had investigated whether Adolf Hitler may have faked his death in the Führerbunker and fled Germany after World War II ended. The ‘Hitler didn’t die in the bunker’ conspiracy theory has been floating around for decades – practically since VE Day – and the show set out to discover whether there was any truth to it.
Hunting Hitler’s investigative team included army man turned MMA fighter Tim Kennedy, World War II historian James Holland and former CIA officer Bob Baer – who was the inspiration for George Clooney’s (The Monuments Men) CIA agent character Bob Barnes in Syriana. In Hunting Hitler’s first season, the team’s investigations took them on journeys to Argentina, Germany, and Spain as they followed up leads and possible sightings of Hitler post-World War II.
As Hunting Hitler progressed into its second season the team expanded their research to include other previously classified documents from the CIA and MI6 alongside evidence from Russian, German and Argentinian government authorities. A third season investigating Nazi weapons of mass destruction premiered in December 2017.
Hunting Hitler Was Cancelled By History Channel In 2017
Just prior to the premiere of Hunting Hitler season 3, History Channel confirmed the show’s third season would be it’s last. Judging by the fact season 3’s official title was Hunting Hitler: The Final Evidence, it seems likely the network never intended to produce a fourth season.
Why Was Hunting Hitler Cancelled?
By promoting season 3 as Hunting Hitler’s final season, it seems the History Channel felt that every angle of the team’s investigation had been exhausted and the show had simply run its natural course.
On the other hand, Hunting Hitler was on the receiving end of quite a lot of criticism over the course of its three seasons. Many of the show’s critics questioned its authenticity and pointed out that much of its premise was based on unsubstantiated and debunked theories. Critics also felt that Hunting Hitler was more like a reality TV show than a serious investigation and trivialized the subject matter - which is kind of tasteless when the topic is one of history’s biggest despots.
Could Hunting Hitler Season 4 Happen In The Future?
Since season 3 aired its final episode in February 2018, there have been no rumors or news to indicate that History Channel has plans to revive the show. For now, Hunting Hitler season 4 is not on the cards.
