Idris Elba would like to reprise the role of Heimdall in the MCU. The British actor was among the performers who joined the franchise back in its early years, debuting in 2011’s Thor directed by Kenneth Branagh. He played the role in the next two solo outings for the God of Thunder (Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok). He also appeared briefly in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron from Joss Whedon, as a set-up for the upcoming Infinity Stones debacle. Sadly, Heimdall met his end at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War at the hands of Thanos (Josh Brolin).
Unlike those who perished as part of the Mad Titan’s ruthless snap, Heimdall, like Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Vision (Paul Bettany), and Gamora (Zoe Saldana) remained dead following the events of Avengers: Endgame. However, Elba is the only one from that roster that doesn’t have an upcoming appearance in the MCU, with all the other supposed dead coming back one way or another. Despite this, Elba is optimistic that he’ll have the chance to step into the shoes of the all-seeing, all-hearing Asgardian sentry again in the future.
Speaking with KTSA while doing the press rounds for his latest project with Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, Elba was asked about his MCU contention. Admitting that he’s yet to see Endgame, and warning everyone to not spoil anything, he discussed what his future is as Heimdall. While there’s no concrete plans, he’s open to reprising the character again.
Elba isn’t wrong, considering Heimdall’s origins, there’s a string of ways he can be brought back into the MCU. If they don’t want to overcomplicate things or be accused of faking deaths again, Marvel Studios can explore earlier timelines when Heimdall was still genuinely alive. The upcoming Loki series on Disney Plus would be a great opportunity to make this happen, considering that it’ll already take place in the past with the God of Mischief traveling through time to be an unlikely influencer on certain historical events. Otherwise, a further exploration of the history of old Asgard might be a narrative they want to take on as the new version of the kingdom settles on Earth. At this point, if they’re able to incorporate Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster back into the fold via Thor: Love and Thunder, bringing back Elba, who’s more than willing, wouldn’t be that difficult.
Listen, Heimdall is essentially part of the god family. So you know, he essentially could be alive. I’m just saying! I’m just putting it out there! The Heimdall character goes way back into, you know, the Thor mythology…And I’m sure there will be an interesting way to bring that alive. Of course I would. Yes.
In the event, however, that Heimdall’s journey in the MCU is done, comic book fans can still look forward to Elbda playing a different role at DC. The actor is attached to James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, slated to come out in 2021. Perhaps once that’s out and Marvel Studios realizes how big of an opportunity they missed by not fully utilizing Elba and Heimdall, they’ll think of a way to bring him back.
