If you’re looking for games that make the most of the Mac’s capabilities, ones that use Metal would make a good start. And one gaming site has put together what it describes as ‘the definitive list of every MacOS Metal game available today’ …
In addition to listing all the games that currently use the Metal API, MacGamerHQ has also added games with metal support slated as coming soon.
Unfortunately, almost two years passed before we saw the payoff, and aside from hating to wait, it also led to delayed top-tier games while companies had to wait until the API was mature enough to implement.
In the spring of 2017, the wait was finally over and an avalanche of both AAA and excellent independent MacOS Metal games quickly followed.
The only downside: if a game requires Metal support, it will need a Mac from 2012 onwards, except MacBooks (2015 or later) or Mac Pros (2013 or later).
Game genres
You can either scroll through the complete listings, or filter them by genre or performance requirements. Genres offered are:
- Action
- Adventure
- Horror
- MMO
- Racing
- Retro
- Shooter
- Strategy
Ten years after ArsTechnica declared Mac gaming dead, developers last year said that there is now cautious optimism about the platform – partly as a result of optimizing for Metal and the launch of Metal 2.
