Pokémon Sword and Shield releases this week, and Game Freak revealed a newly designed evolution for Mr. Mime in the Japanese launch trailer for the title. Mr. Mime, of course, is one of the original 151 Pokémon born alongside Red and Blue back in the 90s. He’s always been a fan-favorite (to loathe, perhaps), and he even had a great role in this year’s Detective Pikachu.
With the more recent entries in the Pokémon franchise, developer Game Freak has gone and updated some of the designs for classic Pokémon. Whether they’ve created entirely new evolutions or region-specific versions of these pocket creatures, they’ve managed to surprise fans by altering the basic designs they know and love. That includes the recently revealed Galarian Ponyta, exclusive to the Galarian region and making its debut in Pokémon Sword and Shield. Mr. Mime’s love was due in the world of Pokémon video games, and that goes double after The Pokémon Company officially revealed the reason he was given an extra finger after his initial design.
Well, congratulations, Mr. Mime fans, the time has come for this classic creature to receive another evolution all its own. Game Freak dropped the Japanese launch trailer for Pokémon Sword and Shield, and a few frames reveal the final form of Mr. Mime, a seemingly British take on the character by the name of Mr. Rime. Mr. Rime appears in the trailer below at the 48-second mark. We first learned of Mr. Rime when its name cracked the roster of leaked Pokémon in Pokémon Sword and Shield last week. It appears right next to Mr. Mime, of course, tipping us off to his eventual reveal.
Mr. Mime’s first alternative form came with Mime Jr., a Pokémon that made its debut back in 2006 in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl for the Nintendo DS. Mime Jr. evolves into Mr. Mime only after it levels up while knowing the move Mimic, a move it can learn at level 15. When Mr. Mime evolves into Mr. Rime, of course, remains to be seen. Fans will need until that information drops with the rest of the good later on this week.
Thanks to all the leaks, trailers, and screenshots, the world knows quite a lot about Pokémon Sword and Shield. It hasn’t all been roses, either, with fans frustrated with some of Game Freak’s decisions when it came to the available the moves available in the game, the Pokédex size, and which Pokémon would actually make the cut.
