Netflix releases the In the Shadow of the Moon movie trailer for the genre-blending film starring Boyd Holbrook. Directed by American filmmaker Jim Mickle, the psychological thriller will premiere later this month at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. Mickle previously directed the indie films We Are What We Are and Cold in July.

Set in Philadelphia, In the Shadow of the Moon follows the bizarre experiences of Thomas Lockhart (Holbrook). He investigates a serial killer and the Market Street Murders, only to discover that a practical approach won’t necessarily lead him to the truth. The killer returns after nine years, which sets off a new sequence of events that not only don’t make scientific sense, but could also destroy Lockhart’s career and family. In the Shadow of the Moon blends elements of a traditional police procedural with science fiction, specifically time travel. The screenplay was written by Gregory Weidman and Geoff Tock. In supporting roles, In the Shadow of the Moon features Michael C. Hall, Cleopatra Coleman, and Bokeem Woodbine.

Netflix unveiled the In the Shadow of the Moon trailer. Opening with a wide cityscape shot, and complemented by ominous sound design, the clip immediately has the gritty feel of David Fincher’s serial killer classic Se7en. After a tragic bus accident, Holbrook’s Lockhart discovers that three corpses in different parts of Philadelphia have puncture wound similarities, which sets the tone for the serial killer premise. During the trailer’s middle section, the past comes back to haunt the police protagonist, as new crimes and the reappearance of a mysterious character defy all logic. The clip then features a game of cat and mouse, as one individual seemingly goes back in time while others try to move forward. Of course, everything is not as it seems, and Lockhart must figure out if he’s been warned by the past or if he’s being manipulated for malicious reasons. Netflix subscribers may be familiar with Holbrook from his role as DEA Agent Steve Murphy in Narcos season 1. With In the Shadow of the Moon, he’ll lead a film that will essentially prime viewers for a fall slate of awards season contenders like The Laundromat, Marriage Story, and The Irishman, not to mention the October release of El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie.

Netflix’s early fall release date for In the Shadow of the Moon could be telling. The streaming service may feel like they have a surprise hit in the works, this coming after mixed reviews for 2018 and 2019 thrillers like Triple Frontier, The Perfection, and Secret Obsession. While Holbrook isn’t quite an A-list star, he’s certainly a familiar face in the movie industry, and for many Netflix subscribers. At nearly two hours in length, In the Shadow of the Moon may indeed be the breakout film that launches Holbrook’s career into the next phase. Based on the Netflix trailer, fans have good reason to be hyped.
