Spider-Man screenwriter David Koepp is back working on the script for Indiana Jones 5. While Harrison Ford’s Star Wars character Han Solo was killed off a few years ago, Indy is still alive and kicking. Indiana Jones got three films in the ’80s starting with Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981. The character last appeared in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which received lackluster reviews. Disney is now looking to restore fans’ faith in the series with a fifth film.
Rumors of Indiana Jones 5 began a few years after Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was released, but Kathleen Kennedy confirmed plans for Indiana Jones 5 back in 2015. An Indiana Jones reboot was once rumored to be starring Chris Pratt or even Bradley Cooper, but that turned out to not be the case partly since Ford doesn’t want Indiana Jones to be recast. Despite the film being announced years ago, Indiana Jones 5 has never gotten past the script stage. Koepp was originally hired to write the script in 2016, but was then replaced by Jon Kasdan, who co-wrote Solo: A Star Wars Story with his father. The script for Indiana Jones 5 then jumped to Dan Fogelman, who was rumored to be replacing Kasdan. Now it looks like Indiana Jones 5 has come back to Koepp.
First reported by Den of Geek, Koepp is back to working on the script for Indiana Jones 5. When asked about his prior involvement with Indiana Jones 5, Koepp revealed, “I actually am again. I’m working on it again. We’re still trying. And I think we’ve got a good idea this time. We’ll see.” Koepp is most known for his writing on Jurassic Park, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, and Mission: Impossible. Koepp also wrote the screenplay for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
The script for Indiana Jones 5 keeps getting passed around to different writers, which is the main reason why the film has gotten delayed so many times. Indiana Jones 5 was originally set for a 2019 release date, but has since been delayed multiple times before eventually swinging to a 2021 release date. If Koepp actually does finish a script that gets approved by Disney, the film could still make its release date of July 9, 2021.
Having so many writers get their hands on the script could be a reason to be concerned, but it is also reassuring that Disney isn’t jumping into the next movie just to make money. Others may not be thrilled that Koepp is back on the film since Kingdom of the Crystal Skull underperformed with fans and critics, but Disney will no doubt want to make Indiana Jones 5 a success so that they can continue to make more sequels for years to come.
