Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) dons an Iron Man suit in Avengers: Infinity War concept art. Setting up the stage for Avengers: Endgame, Joe and Anthony Russo’s 2018 film brought together all pockets of the MCU in the hopes of stopping Thanos (Josh Brolin) from his villainous plan. That meant seeing characters who hadn’t met each other before finally coming face-to-face and learning to work together for the common good. That included the sorcerer and Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.).
The pair of New York-based heroes almost have the same origin story - both were at the height of their careers and living lavish lifestyles when tragedies forced them to re-assess their lives. This led to them assuming their respective superhero persona. In terms of personality and characteristics, they also have some notable similarities, and when the two finally came together, it was one of the most fun dynamics fans have seen from the MCU thus far.
Given the sheer number of characters, Infinity War had to break up the whole cast to smaller groups. Stark and Strange were with Spider-Man (Tom Holland), and eventually the Guardians of the Galaxy who fought Thanos in Titan. One initial idea, however, was for the sorcerer to wear an Iron Man suit (and vice-versa) at some point in their adventure. Concept artists Phil Saunders now gives fans a closer look at what Strange would’ve looked like if this pushed through. Check out the image shared by the illustrator on his Instagram below:
Unfortunately, since Strange was dusted off via Thanos’ deadly snap and Tony met his end in Endgame, fans weren’t able to see more of them together. Their rapport from Infinity War is so fun to watch on the big screen, even if they tend to bicker, they’re both snappy with their responses. They had two interactions in Avengers 4, however, both pertaining to their chances of winning against the Mad Titan, which was in reference to Strange’s peering into the future in Infinity War.
At this point, chances of that coming to fruition are very slim with Iron Man being dead. Meanwhile, Strange’s MCU future still looks long with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness slated for next year. Original helmer Scott Derrickson may have exited the project due to creative differences with Marvel Studios, but Sam Raimi is reportedly in talks for the project. Considering the sorcerer’s ability to travel through time and place, he can reunite with his fellow New Yorker at a different setting.
